I do think that the excitement you felt for Elvis in the mid 50s does shine through in some of the earlier movies, specifically JAILHOUSE ROCK. It's those 60s Elvis movies, more corny than cool, that depress me. Some singers, like Sinatra, can take their vocal skills and translate them into acting skills. Alas, Elvis wasn't one of those artists. But when he gets to sing and swivel he is unmistakably a star. Thanks for writing, Ed. You saw the Berlin Wall come down. I'm also deeply touched by the sadness in his life; he simply didn't know what to do with his money, his fame, his admirers, or himself.
