John, I hope I did this correctly, regading subscription. Anyway, I have a question for you, but (I hope you don’t mind) it does not relate to one of the films in your amazing book. Luis and I finally saw the film “Exodus” with Paul Newman & Eva Marie Saint. And, although the film was educational, quite essential and the script and message were strong, I was extremely disappointed in the performances and found the film very slow (and I love Newman & Saint, etc.). We both wanted it to end. What is your take on this film? Just curious. Michael D.

I look forward to seeing all the videos. If I understand it correctly, one video will be released each day beginning on Monday. Will the videos remain up, so that if I come back to the site in a few weeks, I’ll be able to catch up on them?

My take on EXODUS is apparently your take as well. Though it’s unquestionably well-intentioned and deeply earnest, it’s also bland, uninvolving, and peopled with stick figures. It may be a massive Otto Preminger production, but it lacks essential emotion and passion.

Both stars are hugely disappointing. Paul Newman has never been duller or more disengaged, and Eva Marie Saint is, if possible, even more lifeless than Newman. They make an unconvincing romantic team, and I didn’t care if they ended up together or not.

The only good performance comes from Oscar-nominated Sal Mineo as the Holocaust survivor turned terrorist. His work is so alert and alive that he shames the wooden leads.

The movie cannot justify its mammoth length. Near the finish, Eva Marie actually says, “How is it ever going to end?” Which is exactly what the rest of are thinking.

Oh John – thank God! For a minute there I thought Luis and I were both going nuts. Yes, I totally agree, Sal Mineo is the best thing in “Exodus”, but the other two – of for God sake, what happened there?!?! I was so disappointed, and I had waited so long to see the film, oh well. THANKS again for your take on “Exodus”. Much appreciated! MD

    John,

Your new blog and video snippets have me hooked. It’s like a daily visit with an old friend. This is FUN….and my NetFlix queue has grown exponentially! Thanks for feeding a growing interest in classic movies which make a lot of the current fare hardly worth the effort.
